This work explores the satirical and often bawdy comedies of Aristophanes, written in a style known as Old Attic Comedy, and how they have been performed, enjoyed, critiqued, studied, adapted, taught, and translated from ancient times to the present. Some subjects covered include performance of Aristophanes in modern Greece, debates over literary satire, gender and sexuality in the French translations of Anne Dacier, and Aristophanes’ 19th century English translators. In addition to Aristophanes, other authors and works discussed include J. T. Sheppard, Douglas Young, Jean Racine’s Les Plaideurs, and Andreas Nikolaras’ Panathenaia.
